{"id":196,"date":"2015-08-18T11:54:33","date_gmt":"2015-08-18T16:54:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sprinter-camper.com\/?p=196"},"modified":"2015-08-18T11:54:33","modified_gmt":"2015-08-18T16:54:33","slug":"ac-expansion-valve-replacement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sprinter-camper.com\/ac-expansion-valve-replacement\/","title":{"rendered":"A\/C Expansion Valve replacement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If the A\/C in your Sprinter doesn&#8217;t blow cold anymore an\/or the compressor is noisy, the culprit might be the Expansion valve. This little device controls the amount of refrigerant that enters the Evaporator. Or in tech speak:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The expansion valve removes pressure from the liquid refrigerant to allow expansion or change of state from a liquid to a vapor in the evaporator. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swtc.edu\/ag_power\/air_conditioning\/lecture\/expansion_valve.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Source<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you have the tools to measure the pressure in your A\/C lines you can figure out quickly if the Expansion valve is broken:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If the low side pressure of the A\/C system is too high and the high side too low.<\/li>\n<li>If the low side is too low and the high side pressure is too high.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Expansion valve is located at the dash\u00a0panel between the A\/C refrigerant lines and the evaporator. Replacement of the Valve is quite easy although the access is a bit restricted by the windshield wiper mechanism.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_198\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-198\" style=\"width: 2048px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sprinter-camper.com\/files\/2015\/08\/IMG_1224.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-198\" src=\"https:\/\/sprinter-camper.com\/files\/2015\/08\/IMG_1224.jpg\" alt=\"Location of the A\/C Expansion Valve in the engine compartment.\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Location of the A\/C Expansion Valve in the engine compartment.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You&#8217;ll need to start with the nut that holds the right hand side A\/C lines in place (#6 in the picture below). This I&#8217;ve found was the most tricky part of the whole job since you can&#8217;t get a wrench between the two A\/C lines so the only option is a small Ratchet with an extension.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_200\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-200\" style=\"width: 403px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sprinter-camper.com\/files\/2015\/08\/expansion-valve-details.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-200\" src=\"https:\/\/sprinter-camper.com\/files\/2015\/08\/expansion-valve-details.jpg\" alt=\"Expansion Valve Details\" width=\"403\" height=\"507\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-200\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Expansion Valve Details<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After you have pushed the A\/C lines on the right a bit to the side you can start removing the two bolts (#4) that attach the left hand A\/C lines. These bolts have Allen heads, so be careful not to strip them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_199\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-199\" style=\"width: 2048px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sprinter-camper.com\/files\/2015\/08\/IMG_1225.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-199\" src=\"https:\/\/sprinter-camper.com\/files\/2015\/08\/IMG_1225.jpg\" alt=\"Allen type bolts on the Expansion Valve for one side of the A\/C lines\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1897\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Allen type bolts on the Expansion Valve for one side of the A\/C lines<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now you can remove the Expansion Valve. To install\u00a0the new one just follow the steps in reverse. The replacement part that I&#8217;ve got didn&#8217;t have the bolt for the right hand A\/C lines so I had to fabricate that myself by removing the head of a matching screw. You&#8217;ll also need to replace the O-rings with new ones that should be\u00a0lubricated with clean refrigerant\u00a0oil before installing them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parts needed:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sprinter A\/C Evaporator.
